Note: I have tested these cheap ‘cat toy’ lasers as a possible signal device for lost parties to attract searching aircraft or ground teams, and I believe they have a use. I would never advocate pointing a real laser at any aircraft, but the ones tested had a wide dispersal (ie 10” to 12” over 600′), and are not the type (frequency) that is harmful at a distance. In an emergency situation this dispersion would not present a hazard to observers, but still give a flash that can be seen for a long way. The signal can be repeated, and is more noticeable that flares or mirrors. The devices can work during the day or night, and provide a beam in light smoke, mist or fog. They can be a useful cheap ’emergency only’ device for hikers, etc.
