Why is this story and project important today?
Yellow Wings to Victory celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the successful completion of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), the largest program of its kind in history, and how the BCATP fundamentally changed Canada.
The project honours our Air Force Veterans, who have been in constant operations since 1940. Their contributions have not been equally commemorated as other areas of military service and without their brave contributions, there would have been no closing of the air gap in the Battle of the Atlantic, and no D-Day.
Showcases the evolution of the roles of women in aviation, from initially holding more traditional jobs to rapidly taking on roles of more technical skill and importance to become one of the pillars of BCATP’s success; leading to today’s integration of women across the military.
The project expands museum outreach into electronic classrooms. Connects their collections to the world through immersive digital learning materials. Allows the public to access the collections from anywhere in Canada and across the world. Aims to increase museum visitations.
The project identifies the birth of a new Canada, as then Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie negotiated from a position of strength to demand that Canadians fight as our own nation, forever changing our national identity from British colonists to Canadians.
Museum Partnerships
As part of the Yellow Wings to Victory project, partnerships with the museums of the Canadian Aeronautical Preservation Association (CAPA), will be developed to further educate the public about the BCATP, to promote the documentary, and to increase and enhance museum visits.
Yellow Wings to Victory will also construct a common platform for the CAPA Museums to link together their expertise, resources, stories and collections in one common virtual site – allowing these institutions to overcome the challenges set by geographical separation.
CAPA Museums and Partners can utilize the web docs and video developed during the Yellow Wings To Victory production for in-museum experience enhancements, audio/smartphone/tablet technology guides, and to supplement exhibits/displays. Museums visitors will be greeted upon entry by freestanding display panels which will guide them to the exhibit interactives around the museum. These interactives will be accessible via smartphone, tablet or laptop to supplement exhibits and displays.
